Individual Health Insurance
The Affordable Care Act (ACA)
The Affordable Care Act was signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010. The new law created specific open enrollment periods during which you can enroll or change your medical health insurance plan for you and your family.
Open Enrollment for 2019 for the states of California and Nevada are as follows:
CALIFORNIA: Begins October 15 thru December 14, 2018 for coverage to begin on January 1, 2019. California has extended their enrollment deadlone to January 15, 2019 for coverage to begin February 1, 2019.
NEVADA: Begins November 1 thru December 15, 2018 for coverage to begin on January 1, 2019.
During open enrollment, you can shop for health insurance plans by using an insurance agent/broker, through a health insurance carrier directly, or enroll online using the government-run health insurance exchanges.
If you have health insurance through your employer, than you do not need to worry about open enrollment other than when your employer conducts their own open enrollment.
*If you miss the open enrollment period, you can only apply for health insurance if you have a qualifying event. Under the ACA law, a qualifying event would be: getting married or divorced, birth of a child, moving to a new coverage area, losing your job or COBRA coverage ceases. The state of Nevada does allow its residents to enroll in a health insurance plan at any time through out the year with a 90-day waiting period.
Short-Term Health Insurance
A short-term health insurance plan is designed to help bridge the gaps in your health care coverage during a period of transition. Short-term plans are not compliant with The Affordable Care Act (ACA) and do not have coverage requirements. A short-term medical plan is good for the following situations: between jobs, waiting for an employer's coverage to begin, a temporary or seasonal employee, waiting for the next open enrollment to begin.
